Tethras is a smart-mouthed Dwarf, returning from Dragon Age 2 as one of your steadfast.ClassSpecializationLocation Found (Quest)RomanceableFrostback Peak, NoVarric Tethras is one part adventurous rogue, one part dashing storyteller, and three parts trouble. Born on the surface, Varric has little love for his underground brethren—all his contacts lie with the dwarves of the Merchants Guild, though he has little taste for their schemes. Still, he has found a place as an outsider, rubbing shoulders with both the wealthy elite as well as the worst of scoundrels. To hear him tell of it, that’s all he truly cares about, though anyone who truly knows him claims differently. They say that, try as he might, Varric has been drawn more and more into conflicts that shake the world—ones that he can’t get himself out of with a quick tale.Upgrading Varric. Varric is unique from other companions in that he can only use one weapon - his trusted crossbow named Bianca. Because of this, you may start to find that his weapon just doesn't cut it compared to new weapons you'll find and give to your companions.
However, there is still a way to make Varric viable in combat, and it lies in crafting and customization. You'll be able to find custom items both from merchants and in the wild called Bianca Arms, Biana Aiming, and Bianca Grip. Using the Customize Weapons table in Haven and Skyhold, you can add these to the several slots available on Varric's Crossbow. These custom items not only come in several levels, but can also be crafted to further improve their capabilities.
You may want to take Varric with you so you can hear some unique dialogue, but it's not required. Travel to the Hinterlands, specifically the Upper Lake Camp. Leave it southeast, then circle west to the lake itself. Continue to the south of the lake where it's the thinnest, then cross it to the west side. Head up the ramp going south, slipping behind the waterfall.
Enter the door there to enter Valammar.By the time you take this quest, you may have already been here before, so it should be easy to navigate, though it's filled with stronger enemies this time. Cross the bridge, head up the stairs, then turn right. Stay on the overlooking balcony as you go.
Head to the end of the path and you'll come to some stairs that will lead down. At the bottom of the steps, cross the lower bridge to the original side. After crossing the bridge, turn left and head down the second set of stairs.
Keep going down, and you'll soon be standing in front of a gray stone panel surrounded by yellow stone walls. The panel is a door, and you can interact with it to open it.You'll have two more rooms to traverse. They both have enemies, and the second one will provide a minor challenge due to the number and strength of your enemies. There are no supply caches around, but you shouldn't need them.At the end of the second room, you'll find a book on a desk, and a key sits on it. Don't loot the key until you've looted everything else in the room.
When you're ready to exit the area, loot the key, participate in the cut scene, and you'll automatically exit the area. The stone panel will lock behind you, and you will not be able to reenter.Return to Skyhold and speak to Varric.
You'll need to walk out of Valammar first before you can fast travel away. After speaking to Varric, you'll resolve the quest.
